In 1950 when the Japanese community finally returned to Watsonville from the internment camps of World War II, it was a momentous occasion to rebuild their lives. For those who were bonsai aficionados, this period marked a time to revive their passion for the timeless art of bonsai. Fresh bonsai trees sprouted from seeds, or emerged from cuttings, or were crafted from grafted material sourced from various plants, including fruit trees, maple trees, pines, junipers, and more. Vibrant flowering plants like azaleas and camellias became particularly popular among bonsai enthusiasts as well. The humble cement pots used by the Japanese community during their post-internment era remained in use until the Watsonville Bonsai Club came into existence in 1970. By then, the economic fortunes of the Japanese community had taken a dramatic turn for the better, allowing them to acquire traditional bonsai pots, which were still quite pricey at the time.
