Celtic Pencil Holder

Celtic Pencil Holder

This is my first attempt at taking a 2D sketch and wrapping it around a 3D object, with the intention of creating a pencil holder that showcases a Celtic knot design wrapped and cut into the holder. Print Settings Printer Brand: LulzBot Printer: Mini Rafts: No Supports: No Resolution: I recommend high detail settings to ensure smooth curves; however, this can significantly prolong print time, so it's up to you. Infill: The infill shouldn't greatly impact this object, so I used the default 20% infill percentage. To make the object stronger and less prone to breakage, simply increase the infill to around 40%. Notes This design should fit on most printer beds, given that it was printed with a Lulzbot Mini; nonetheless, ensure that your printer's build volume has sufficient height to accommodate this object. Note: Be certain to orient the cup correctly before printing. Printing the cup sideways will result in a poor print quality. How I Designed This Main Obstacle The most difficult part of designing this was projecting a 2D sketch onto a 3D surface. To achieve this in Fusion 360, you must first create a tangent sketch on the desired surface and then use the 'Project to Surface' feature to transfer the sketch onto the surface. Next, create construction planes along the new paths created by the 2D sketch on the 3D surface, and then sketch a shape that will be used to cut out the surface onto the construction plane. Once this is complete, you can use the 'Sweep' tool to sweep this new construction sketch along the 3D path, creating the desired effect shown in the images. This was definitely time-consuming and challenging for me, but it was well worth the effort to learn how to accomplish this.
