The topmost internal plane that encompasses a room from above serves as the definition for a ceiling. Not regarded as a fundamental component of architecture, a ceiling masks the inverted roof framework beneath or conceals the level floor directly above in the same structure. Connecting these surfaces with rounded transitional sections called coving is a common practice used to visually integrate the ceiling into surrounding wall boundaries.
