Architect George Nelson once stated that the chair frequently becomes the primary expression of the original concept. With an impressive design portfolio under his belt as Herman Miller's creative director from 1945 to 1972, Nelson then set his sights on making a significant impact in the field of lighting design. When furnishing his office, Nelson chanced upon a stunning silk-covered Swedish lamp hanging from the ceiling that he desired but deemed too pricey. A photograph of mothballed Liberty ships featuring decks wrapped with netting and treated with self-webbing plastic later appeared in the newspaper, catching Nelson's attention and triggering an epiphany. Nelson was immediately inspired and began experimenting by the following evening, and within no time, the ingenious Bubble Lamp concept was born in 1952. This visionary creation features a turntable mounted skeleton of steel wires wrapped with washable film, creating an innovative lamp design. As the switch is flipped, it glows with soft light. The authentic Bubble Lamp is now available for purchase in collaboration with the George Nelson Foundation, bringing this timeless masterpiece to life. The lamp itself does not come equipped with a bulb; instead, customers have their choice of LED, CFL, or incandescent bulbs with an E26 base and a maximum power rating of 150 watts (60 watts for the small saucer model). Notably, it carries a UL Listing certification, signifying its compliance with strict safety standards. What's more, each Bubble Lamp is proudly crafted in the United States, making it a symbol of exceptional craftsmanship.
