Cecrops and his daughter Pandrosos

Cecrops and his daughter Pandrosos

myminifactory

This fragmentary sculpture is a reduced copy of an original work discovered on the western pediment of the Parthenon in the Acropolis, Greece. The work is believed to portray Cecrops and his daughter Pandrosos, or Hercules and Hebe. The sculpture is also a replica of the same artwork, reduced by one third, from Temple F at Eleusis, constructed possibly in honor of Sabina, the wife of Emperor Hadrian. The original version of the Parthenon is housed at The SMK (KAS586). The central theme of the west pediment was the struggle between Athena and Poseidon for patronage over Attica. Drawings made by Jacques Carrey in 1674 reveal many figures now lost, including Athena and Poseidon, who dominated the center. The original work from which this copy was created is located at The National Archaeological Museum in Greece, Eleusis (ORIG1312). Further reading can be found in Karouzou 1968, 67, as well as Boardman 1985, fig. 82.1.
