Create a DIY hovercraft or puck using a CD/DVD and a balloon. Design your own CAD with your 10-year-old child. Watch it in action at http://www.flickr.com/photos/splatspace/5231943755/. Print the design on a Makerbot, fitting up to four on one plate. The central hole is just a pilot hole; drill it out with a hand drill to 1/16" or 1/8", depending on balloon size. Glue the bottom of the CD to the center. Inflate a balloon and fit it over the rim, then release for skimming fun!
