I created a mystery artifact for my government class so students could examine it and try to guess which president it connects to. I chose this president because he was, in my opinion, one of the most influential presidents who served during one of the most challenging times in United States history. I would like to thank Mr. Josh Ajima for allowing me to use his photo of my artifact as my first cover photo. Clues: This is an ax from the Civilian Conservation Corps The Civilian Conservation Corps is a program created under the New Deal This president was president during World War II This president visited the CCC during his time as president Significance and Research The Object: This object is an ax from the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) Details about the Object: What details about the object are a significant link to the President? The ax clearly says Civilian Conservation Corps on it, which is one of the earliest programs created under the New Deal in order to relieve unemployment during the Great Depression. The CCC provided work primarily for young unmarried men. The individuals who participated in the CCC worked to plant trees, build flood barriers, fight forest fires, and maintain forest roads and trails. President: Franklin D. Roosevelt Served 1933 – 1945 Democrat Contribution/ "The Act" & Presidential Role Presidential Role: Chief Legislator and Chief Executive What was the political action? Law, treaty, executive order? Some of the New Deal legislation became law and other parts were executive orders. Researched Description: The New Deal was in place from 1933 until 1939. The New Deal took action to bring economic relief and reforms in industry, agriculture, finance, waterpower, labor, and housing. Most of the New Deal legislation, including the CCC, was enacted within the first three months of Roosevelt's presidency which is known as the Hundred Days. The CCC existed from 1933 until 1942. The CCC, at its largest, employed 500,000 men. During its entire existence it provided work for 3,000,000 people. New Deal programs such as the Civilian Conservation Corps provided relief for Americans during a time of great uncertainty and need, the Great Depression. Impact on America/ Significance: Why is this important to American history?
