The ruined pillbox lies scattered along Cayton Bay's coast near Scarborough, a testament to the region's complex history. The Yorkshire coast, renowned for its dramatic cliffs, is also home to numerous beautiful wide beaches. In 1940, Britain faced an imminent threat of invasion, prompting defensive measures to be implemented along these shores. Tank traps, barbed wire emplacements, and pillboxes are common sights along the north east coast. At Cayton, the relentless erosion over 80 years has caused the cliffs to recede, sending the pillboxes tumbling onto the sand. This particular example remains intact, but has rolled upside down, providing an unobstructed view of its floorplan and machine gun embrasures. The unique graffiti on this pillbox makes it stand out from others in the area, adding a personal touch to the structure's history. In May 2020, 126 images were captured using Metashape, a process that proved surprisingly enjoyable during the lockdown period.
