The Assumption Cathedral in Coria is a temple that boasts a unique blend of architectural styles. Built between the 16th and 18th centuries, this magnificent structure replaced an earlier church from the XIV century with pointed arches that spanned across its cloister. The current cathedral, however, stands as a stunning representation of late Gothic and Renaissance styles with notable baroque additions. The original construction of this grand temple began in 1498 under Bishop Pedro Ximenez de Préxamo's supervision, marking the start of a large church with a single nave adorned with star-shaped ribbed vaults characteristic of the decadent Gothic architecture of the time. Coria Cathedral boasts not one but two distinctive facades. The northern facade, featuring late Gothic style, is complemented by sharp arches flanked by pinnacles that are the handiwork of master craftsman Martin de Solorzano. On the southern side lies the beautiful Door of Forgiveness, which boasts a plateresque style adorned with basket arches framed by elegant Renaissance columns and capped off by two triangular pediments decorated with reliefs of iconic biblical scenes, including the Annunciation, Nativity, Adoration of Shepherds, Epiphany, and more. Perched above the door is a striking pointed arch window featuring intricate Renaissance ornamentation that unfortunately clashes with its adjacent structure. The mastermind behind this breathtaking facade was none other than renowned artist Pedro de Ybarra. Last but not least, Coria Cathedral proudly displays an expansive baroque tower that appears somewhat stumpy in comparison to its overall width, a unique feature crafted by Manuel de Larra and the Churriguera dynasty of skilled artisans.
