Caterpie, also known as the "worm" Pokémon,[54] was created by Ken Sugimori's skilled hand.[55] Satoshi Tajiri, the mastermind behind the series, drew heavily from his childhood passion for insect collecting in designing Caterpie and other Pokémon species.[56] Specifically, Caterpie's design is based on a caterpillar, namely the one found on the Swallowtail butterfly.[57] Its name originates from the word "caterpillar."
