The Reims Cathedral of Our Lady, constructed in the 13th century, ranks third after Paris and Chartres cathedrals but before Strasbourg, Amiens, and Beauvais cathedrals. It is one of France's most important Gothic structures, known for both its extraordinary architecture and rich statuary. In 1991, UNESCO included it on the World Heritage List. The Reims Cathedral, in the Old Regime, was the site where French monarchs were consecrated. The last king crowned was Charles X, on May 28, 1825. Post-World War I, the cathedral was dubbed a "martyr" due to German bombing, which saw it as a national symbol of France. A scaffold left in the north tower caught fire, allowing flames to spread through the framework. All the lead from the roof melted and dripped through the gargoyles. Neighbors collected it and later restored it after the conflict.
