Catcher Mask Protector

This innovative product is designed to safeguard baseball catchers' heads by adding a three-part polycarbonate layer that incorporates a shock-absorbing material in between. Despite wearing masks, catchers are vulnerable to brain injuries, some leading to career-ending consequences. This design addresses the issue of youth catchers unable to use other protective masks due to mask type restrictions. The prototype will be entirely made of polycarbonate, but the final product will consist of three layers: polycarbonate, shock absorber, and another layer of polycarbonate. To enhance ease of use, this accessory can be easily attached or removed from the catcher's existing mask. Positioned atop the mask's steel cage, it targets the area where most brain injuries occur – above the cage. By using FDM printing, this groundbreaking design has the potential to save many catchers' baseball seasons and careers from premature ending due to head injuries. The concept was developed by Grand Haven High School in Grand Haven, MI under the guidance of instructor Jeremy Case.
