Catacombs of San Gennaro in Naples, Italy - a vast network of underground burial sites dating back to the 2nd century AD and used until the Middle Ages. Estimated excavated floor area: 5,313.18 square meters, with over 1,000 more square meters dedicated to tombs and chambers yet to be uncovered. The unexcavated areas are substantial, and scanning these spaces is often conducted in complete darkness. A total of 1,115 FARO and Z&F scans were meticulously aligned using FARO SCENE, individually exported in e57 format, and then imported into Reality Capture for alignment and meshing purposes. Model cleaning was undertaken in Geomagic Wrap, while decimation and retopo tasks were completed using Instant Meshes and Zbrush. UV unwrap and texturing processes were carried out within Reality Capture, culminating in the creation of a normal map rendered in XNormal. This remarkable project is the result of a collaborative effort between GDH, the Zamani Project, Università degli Studi di Napoli “L’Orientale”, and the Administration of the Catacombe di Napoli. The descriptions provided for this project were generously contributed by Seniorprofessor Dr. Dieter Korol, Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster.
