Heavy construction equipment, known as excavators, feature a boom, stick, bucket, and cab on a rotating platform or "house." Sitting atop an undercarriage with tracks or wheels, these machines come in both cable-operated and hydraulic varieties. Cable-operated excavators use winches and steel ropes for movement, while hydraulic models rely on fluid power to operate through hydraulic cylinders and motors. This linear actuation sets them apart from their cable-operated counterparts. Originally evolving from steam shovels, they are also called power shovels.
