The Emperor's triumph over the Dacians is immortalized in the majestic Trajan's Column, erected on the Danube frontier between AD 101-2 and 105-6 to commemorate his victorious campaigns. Standing proudly at the heart of the Emperor's Forum in Rome, this monumental column takes the form of a hollow shaft built from the finest Parian marble, measuring 3.83 meters in diameter at its base and soaring to an impressive height of 38 meters, including the sturdy square plinth that supports it and the crowning capital above. Along its entire length, the continuous frieze of low-relief sculptures presents a vivid narrative of Trajan's military conquests, stretching over 200 meters and featuring no fewer than 2500 figures in intricate detail. In ancient times, strategically positioned between the two great libraries of the Forum, these reliefs could be closely examined up to a certain height, their vibrant colors and gleaming metal accessories adding an extra layer of depth and visual appeal. Originally, the column's apex was crowned with a colossal bronze statue of Trajan himself; this impressive work of art was later replaced in the 16th century by a new bronze depiction of Saint Peter, crafted by the skilled hands of Bastiano Torrigiano.
