The legendary twins born to Spartan queen Leda were Dioskouroi, famous throughout history for helping men in times of crisis. Castor and Polydeuces, also known as the Castores, Castor and Pollux, were revered in ancient Greece and Rome alike. A temple dedicated to these brothers was erected in the Roman Forum during the early fifth century BC after their victory over the dictator A. Postumius at Lake Regillus in 484 BC brought glory to Rome. Rebuilt several times, this temple remained a significant cult site throughout the imperial period. Decorative statuettes showcase the brothers as skilled horsemen, adorned with felt caps and short cloaks, holding sheathed swords or daggers as they embody their traditional roles.
