The legendary twins, Castor and Polydeuces, born to the Spartan queen Leda, made history by being fathered by two men: Zeus and King Tyndareus. Throughout ancient times, these gods were revered for their ability to help humans, especially during critical moments of need. In Greek, they were known as the Dioskouroi, while in Latin, they were called the Castores, both names referencing the twin brothers Castor and Pollux. When Roman forces led by dictator A. Postumius won a pivotal battle at Lake Regillus in 484 BC, the twins earned their place in history, leading to the construction of a massive temple dedicated to them in the early fifth century BC. The temple underwent several rebuilds over the centuries, but the cult remained a significant part of Roman culture even during the imperial period. These exquisite statues showcase the brothers as horsemen, proudly wearing felt caps and short cloaks while holding their traditional sheathed swords or daggers.
