## Castle / Vanishing Trunk (STC #181A/B) ### A tray-packing puzzle by Stewart Coffin Several puzzles in one: fit all five pieces into each of the three openings. Two of the openings are house-shaped but with an extra protrusion, either at the top - the chimney of the "Castle" or bottom - the "Vanishing Trunk" of a tree. Mysteriously, the same pieces can also squeeze into the third opening, which has no such protrusion, but calls for a different solution! This puzzle is one of a series of tray-packing puzzles. If you're unfamiliar with Coffin's tray-packing puzzles, I'd recommend starting with one of the others instead, before tackling this one. It was originally published as two separate designs - Castle (#181A) and Vanishing Trunk (#181B), using identical sets of pieces. I've chosen to combine them here in a three-in-one tray. There are three STL files: the pieces; the tray; and an optional lid. The pieces are rendered a bit smaller than with other puzzles of this type, so that all three openings can be included in a single tray, while keeping the overall puzzle to a manageable size. It's modeled using puzzlecad, and I have included the .scad file in case you want to remix it. You will need puzzlecad version 1.3 or later. ### About the Designer Stewart Coffin is perhaps the most influential designer of interlocking mechanical puzzles, having produced a wide range of ingenious designs of various shapes and complexity.
