Montánchez Castle is a quintessential representation of medieval Reconquista castles. This group of buildings appears to have originated from a fortress that gave rise to walls enclosing the Old Village. Today, its imposing presence dominates the surrounding landscape with an irregular layout and layered volumes, accompanied by fortification curtains. The continuous shift between Moorish and Christian rule allowed for the incorporation of distinctive architectural elements, a blend of early Muslim styles and Christian typology; remarkably, three surviving cisterns date back to this era. Under the administration of the Order of Santiago, substantial renovations and expansions took place, prioritizing fortification by elevating walls and reconstructing enclosures. Situated at its highest point, the castle's main structure encompasses various ancillary buildings within, including a watchtower, armory, a lower-floor noble room, and an outbuilding. Notably, a chapel stands sentinel at the entrance of the castle complex.
