Pazin Castle stands out as the largest and most well-preserved fortress in all of Istria. Written records first mention it back in 983 AD, within a deed issued by Emperor Otto II. The document reveals that the Kastel was gifted to the Bishop of Poreč. By 996 AD, Patriarch Aquileia had claimed the castle, but just 74 years later, in 1070, it was returned to Poreč's bishop. Fast forward to 1175 and we find the Bishop handing control over to Menhard, the ruler of Black City. When his daughter married a member of the Loze Goricki family, they gained control of Kastel by 1374. Shortly after that, the Habsburgs took over, exerting their influence from behind the castle walls as they administered the entire Central Istria region, specifically Pazin County.
