The castle sits atop an impressive rocky outcropping that rises 149 meters above sea level, commanding the entire Huerta of Murcia, nourished by the Segura River.\nThe castle's roots date back to Islamic times. Early written records indicate its existence around 1078-1079, but it wasn't until Ibn Mardanis' reign that the castle took on its current layout, linking it to the splendor of the Taifa kingdom of Murcia. Its enduring fame would come later, however, with the incorporation into the Crown of Castile in 1243. Alfonso X the Wise made his Murcian residence here, tying the castle to the Castilian monarchs. When the Vinalopó Valley and low-lying Segura River Valley were added to the Kingdom of Valencia at the beginning of the 14th century, Monteagudo Castle became a constant sentinel on the border.
