The Spanish Coat of Arms at Castillo de San Marcos in St. Augustine, Florida stands watch over the sally port entrance to the fortification. Unfortunately, surface degradation and loss of carved detail have affected it since its early documentation. The carved elements and dedicatory inscription below are heavily damaged by spalling, cracking, and weathering. Depicted on the coat of arms are castles and lions that represent Castile and León - the two main kingdoms that merged to form modern Spain. This 3D model was created using an Artec Leo structured light full color scanner with a resolution of 100 microns, adjustable for high detail. Having a digital surrogates allows rapid prototyping and modeling, which can aid managers in conservation, condition assessment, and restoration efforts. A condition photo taken in 1957 serves as a baseline for monitoring deterioration alongside our 3D model.
