The Castle of San Giorio towers over the middle valley of Susa from a rocky spur where the town of San Giorio di Susa stands, about 45 kilometers from the capital city of Turin. Among the most evident castles in the Susa Valley for those traveling through this territory, its visible remains today - that is, the round tower and the adjacent hall - constitute only one part of a much larger and more imposing complex, whose purpose was to control the passage of merchants and armies along the valley. Mainly destroyed in large part during the 18th century, with further collapses in the 20th century, it is currently being restored.
