The Castanets: A Timeless Musical Instrument Castanets are a percussion instrument crafted from wood that have been known and utilized by the Phoenicians for over three thousand years. Other cultures, such as the Egyptians, employed cymbals, which share similarities with castanets. Through trade routes, these instruments spread throughout the Mediterranean region, including modern-day Croatia and southern Italy. However, it is in Spain where the castanets have been most preserved and developed, becoming an integral part of their national identity alongside the Spanish flamenco guitar, whether classical or traditional.
