Cast of the Townley Caryatid

Columns designed to resemble human figures demonstrate how architecture is carefully proportioned to fit perfectly with human dimensions. Female sculptures known as caryatids were first introduced at Delphi around 525 B.C., yet the most iconic examples, dating back to approximately 410 B.C., can still be seen on the Erectheion in Athens. This particular sculpture is a replica of a caryatid from Herodes' villa, located just outside Rome. This replica was cast between 1850 and 1900, but the original dates back to around 161-171 A.D.
