Cast of a Pilaster from Verona

This magnificent pilaster is a testament to refined architectural decoration of grandiose public buildings in Verona. Dating back to the 1st - 2nd Centuries A.D., the pilaster's parts were meticulously reused, according to tradition, on one side of the Cathedral, in the funeral monument of archdeacon Pacificus (846 AD). Later, they were placed differently again at the Cathedral, captivating the interest of late medieval and Renaissance artists. The pilaster finally found its home at the Maffeiano Museum, where it is proudly displayed today. Crafted from fine marble sourced from quarries in present-day Turkey, this stunning pilaster stands over five metres tall; a partial cast made in 2006 showcases its grandeur.
