The Santo Domingo Museum is one of the top tourist destinations in the city, situated right at the heart of Colonial Zone, where Dominican history was forged. Founded on October 5th, 1511 by King Ferdinand of Aragon, the Museum was originally the Royal Court for the New World's first ever court of justice. As a result, it served as the home and office for Governors and Captains General back in that era. Famous figures have lived within these walls over time. Moreover, it was once used by the School of Fine Arts, providing shelter to various government agencies too. This milestone happened during King Juan Carlos I's 1976 visit, when it officially became the Santo Domingo Museum of History and Colonial Art.
