Facing the Cathedral, we see this building that appears to be Oviedo's oldest civil edifice since it survived the fire that broke out in the city on Christmas Eve 1521. The neighborhood most affected by the fire was Socastiello, where the palace stood. Commissioned to build at the end of the XV century by Don Rodrigo de la Rúa, accountant for the Catholic Kings. Two centuries later, it passed into the ownership of the Marquesado de Santa Cruz de Marcenado, so the palace is also known by this name. The original core of the construction seems to have been an old tower from the XIV century that today is covered with a body added later. The current palace dates back to the early XVI century.
