In the 4th century BC, types of homes began to spread that reflected the formation of the family as an independent unit. Since medieval times, single-room dwellings have been found. These are usually attached to each other to form almost entire blocks. A widespread housing model takes hold: from Mesopotamia to Egypt, from Crete to ancient Greece. The dwelling in Mesopotamia adapts to its social and climatic environment by developing around an open interior courtyard, from which one accesses the various areas. The zones are well-defined: on the ground floor, men's lives unfold, while women and servants reside on the upper floor. In contrast, ancient Egypt found collective solutions in shared homes with terraces, built with rough bricks and straw, sometimes constituting entire neighborhoods.
