Carved piece of stone from a mithraeum
myminifactory
Workmen digging a drain in Hulme, Manchester in 1821 uncovered carved stones from an ancient temple known as a mithraeum. This mithraeum was dedicated entirely to the worship of the eastern god Mithras. Devotees believed that Mithras embodied light itself. Two companions, Cautes and Cautopates, assisted Mithras in slaying a bull, which symbolized evil. The popularity of Mithras worship among Roman soldiers is well-documented.
