Carved Nimba Mask at The British Museum, London
myminifactory
This intricately carved mask (nimba) crafted from wood with metal embellishments hails from the Baga people of Guinea, created in the 20th century. Nimba masks are deeply rooted within the simo society and are often paraded through fields, showered with rice to boost fertility. Due to their substantial weight, relays of dancers are needed, and the community reaps the greatest benefits when a mask deteriorates from age and use. This object is part of "Scan The World," a non-profit initiative pioneered by MyMiniFactory, which aims to create a digital repository of fully 3D printable sculptures, artworks, and landmarks from around the globe for public access at no cost. Scan the World is an open-source community project; if you have intriguing items nearby and would like to contribute, email stw@myminifactory.com to learn how you can participate.
