Carved Lion's Head
myminifactory
Excavators at Carchemish unearthed numerous pedestals for statues, altars and basins adorned with bulls or lions. This basalt lion's head was one of two lions that originally comprised an ornate statue base. The imposing statue, possibly representing a deity, once stood majestically beside the 'Lion's Gate' at Carchemish. Two mighty lions were grasped by a fearsome griffin demon whose hand can be seen on the left side of this lion's head.
