Carter House Museum in St. David's, Bermuda, is believed to have been constructed around 1700 by John and Martha Hayward. This early hall and parlor house features a typical vernacular design with cellars carved directly into the hillside below. A significant expansion likely took place during the late 18th century, incorporating the original northern gable end and hiding the external chimney within the present structure. The iconic entrance steps of Carter House still boast inviting benches outside, where visitors can await their welcome before being received by the museum staff.
