Carreaux de pavement
sketchfab
These pavement tiles composed the flooring of the Grand Cabinet in the castle of the Dukes of La Trémoïlle, in Thouars. At Marie de la Tour d'Auvergne's request, the young wife of the duke, the medieval old castle was destroyed and a new building, to the taste of the day, was rebuilt from the 1630s onwards. These large-firing faience tiles were made in Nevers. They are part of a series of 480 tiles ordered in 1636 by an Italian master workshop: the Conrade. Following their sudden success, Nevers became France's first centre for faïence by the 17th century. Inv. No.: 1613 (entire tile at centre) from the collections of the Henri Barré Museum in Thouars (79 - France). See the entry on our online database. 3D model based on photographic coverage.
