Carpuride motorcycle GPS mod to fit Garmin Zumo mount

After having invested in a Garmin XT2 GPS, and then fitting powered mounts to my various motorcycles, decided that I really hated the Garmin and much preferred the carplay / android auto setup. So I purchased the 5" carpuride motorcycle GPS which allows you to run either Carplay or Android Auto on your motorcycle. I was so impressed with this device that I purchased the 7" version as soon as it was released. As the mounting design of the two carpuride GPS is the same, this modification works on both versions. Although the Carpuride GPS ships with an integrated RAM compatible 25mm ball, this did not suit my own preferences as I wanted to continue to use my existing Garmin mounts, and still have the option of using the XT2 if I wished. In addition, for all of the faults of the Garmin Zumo, the mounting system is quite neat and compact, and not too obtrusive when the GPS is removed from the bike. The Carpuride GPS runs off a direct 12 volt feed, as does the Zumo XT2, so there is no messing around with wiring or voltage mods for this mount. Note that the earlier XT (and other Zumo models) have a 12 volt to 5 volt conversion, so as far as I know this will only work with the XT2 mount (which has a slightly different pin layout from the other Garmin mounts)I have not tested the Carpuride to see whether it will run on 5 volts so it may be possible to adapt this design for other versions of the Zumo that uses the same mount.You will need:a Garmin Zumo XT2, and powered mountCarpuride W502 or W702 motorcycle GPS. Note there are other similar looking products on AliExpress, that I assume are the same but cannot advise on this.2 of M2.5x8mm cap head bolts (stainless steel recommended)2 of M2.5mm nuts2 of M2.5 solder ring tabs ( e.g. https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0C77MH3ZS?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details&th=1)4 of M3x16mm cap head or button stainless steel boltsAssembly is pretty straight forward:Fit the Zumo XT2 as normal, and ensure that the powered mount works.Print the STL here - I also enclose the Fusion 360 file in case you want to modify itCut the power lead as shown in the photo.Solder the wires to the solder tabsInsert the M2.5x8 bolts into the 3d printed mount with the solder taps sandwiched between the plastic and the head of the bolt.Make sure you pay attention to the positive / negative posts as shown in the photos. The positive terminal is the side with the "arrow" printed into it. Don't blame me if you skip this step and mess it up. To put it another way, the top pin when sat on the bike is the positive terminal, the bottom is the negative. If you are not sure, use a multimeter!Insert the M2.5 nuts the other side and tighten so nice and snugRemove the rear ball plate off the Carpuride unit by undoing the 4 screws. Note that this is a heatsink for the CPU, so take care not to damage the thermal pad behind this.Cut off the ball / support so the rear of the Carpuride bracket is as flat as possible (see photos)After cutting the ball off, this leaves you with a hole in the centre of the bracket, which is not good if you want it waterproof! I used the 2 part epoxy putty to fill this hole and make it nice and flat on the CPU side. This epoxy goes off very quickly and is very durable.Assemble the dry plate back onto the rear of the Carpuride unit. Push the 3d printed mount over the top, and secure using the M3x16 bolts.If all has gone well, you can now go and fit the Carpuride unit to your bike and it should power up immediately you turn the ignition on. You can obviously switch between the Garmin Zumo and Carpuride GPS as you wish.Safe riding.
