Dr. Carol Küttel (1818 - 1875) served as mayor of Timisoara between 1859-1861 and 1867-1872. This year commemorates 140 years since the horse tram was introduced in Timisoara by him. As mayor, he enjoyed immense popularity among the people. During his administration, the military role of Timisoara Fortress gradually diminished. This facilitated the construction of public roads within the city and surrounding area development. He first conceptualized a plan for a horse tramway. The first trees were planted in Prince Eugen Square (now Liberty Market), streets were paved, hospital and city hall buildings were extended, a volunteer fire brigade was founded and residential areas restored. He also established his own funds to build Lenau High School, several theaters, and hotels in Timisoara. This object is part of "Scan The World".
