Cardboard spool cap
thingiverse
Attach a cap to your cardboard spool to prevent damage from the spindle; I created such a spool (http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1550). After experiencing filament issues due to tension, I decided to suspend my spool over my Makerbot. To do this, resize the cap if needed (mine is 8mm so used 10mm hole), print two, insert one on each side of the spool with sleeves and spikes, making guide holes if necessary. Secure the cap with hot glue or another adhesive if needed. Additionally, print a suspension system (http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:674).
