Carbon Cub Replacement Wheel and Tire
thingiverse
The original Carbon Cub tires were surprisingly light, but unfortunately lacked any cushion or compression during landings. I decided to upgrade by purchasing the Dubro tires, which weigh in at a substantial 384 grams each. However, I recently discovered even lighter options that significantly reduced the weight of my aircraft. To achieve this, I began printing my own custom tires using a Ninjaflex material with an optimal 11% fill rate. This proved to be the perfect balance between flexibility and durability. By printing at a moderate speed of 30mm per hour, I was able to produce tires that were not only incredibly light but also exhibited excellent performance during landings. To further enhance their durability, I opted to use support structures on both the walls and bottom of each tire. This strategic approach allowed me to maintain a consistent wall thickness of 1.5mm while minimizing any potential weaknesses in the design. The wheel hubs were printed at a slightly higher fill rate of 100%, ensuring that they remained robust and stable even under intense stress. Once completed, I carefully glued them into place within the tire assembly, securing them firmly to prevent any movement or vibration during flight. By incorporating support structures on the wheels as well, I was able to create a seamless and consistent overall design that greatly improved the performance of my aircraft.
