Print the mechanism using ABS or a similar robust material with some flexibility, as PLA may not be sufficient. Use a raft when printing. If the ball fails to snap into place due to print tolerances, simply sand down the joint (not the ball) slightly, being cautious not to remove too much material, which could compromise the ball's ability to hold securely. I incorporated the ball joint feature after repeated attempts to replicate the original design ended in premature strap snapping.
