From Tivoli, Hadrian's Villa. Caracalla (4 April 188 to 8 April 217) was a Roman Emperor who ruled from AD 198 to 217. Born Marcus Aurelius Severus Antoninus Augustus, he belonged to the Severan Dynasty and was the eldest son of Septimius Severus and Julia Domna. As his father's co-ruler since 198, Caracalla shared power with him until Severus' death in 211. Following this, Caracalla ruled alongside his younger brother Geta for a short time, despite their strained relationship. However, Caracalla ultimately had Geta assassinated later that year. During his reign, Caracalla's empire was plagued by internal turmoil and constant invasions from the Germanic tribes.
