I designed a ball joint in OpenSCAD and added it to a Note 3 holder I found here on Thingiverse. A threaded gear that keeps the joint in place simply screws over its outer surface without needing a threaded surface. Printing this design is difficult due to the necessity of supports, regardless of where you place it on the plate.
