Moritz Hartmann is most renowned for his pivotal role as a highly accomplished captain during Niels Juls' era, significantly bolstering the reputation of Danish power under foreign leadership. He bears direct responsibility for the Parthenon's catastrophic destruction in 1687 when he ordered a bomb to be fired from his ship at the temple. The aftermath saw the Acropolis and Parthenon reduced to ruins, with fragments being seized by souvenir hunters, the most notable being Lord Elgin, whose 'Elgin Marbles' are currently held captive by The British Museum. Hartmann also personally retrieved two heads from the south metope 4, which are now proudly displayed at the Danish National Museum.
