The Capitoline Wolf statue is a bronze sculpture of a she-wolf nursing twin human babies. The artwork is inspired by the legend of Rome's founding and is available for download on Scan the World here. According to the myth, Numitor, grandfather of Romulus and Remus, was overthrown by his brother Amulius. The usurper ordered the twins to be thrown into the Tiber River, but they were rescued by a she-wolf who cared for them until a herdsman named Faustulus found and raised them. The Capitoline Wolf has been housed in the Palazzo dei Conservatori on the Campidoglio since 1471. In 1921, the Italian government gave Romania five copies of the sculpture as a gift. This relief in Deva, Romania, is a decorative addition to a statue depicting Decabalus and serves as one example of many Roman-inspired artworks found in the country.
