Capital

This exquisite 13th-century marlstone capital has immense cultural significance. For over seven centuries it remained perfectly preserved within the church's masonry, a true marvel (lapis vivus). In 1984, archaeologists unearthed this stunning artifact in the southern window of the polygonal apse of the Church of the Holy Saviour. Analysis suggests that the cluster of shafts was originally intended for the polygonal apse. The herb artemisia vulgaris, also known as mugwort, is a potent medicinal plant believed to ward off evil spirits and prevent snake bites. Its leaves are frequently depicted on the western wall of Reims Cathedral and both wings of Naumburg's western rood screen, where a crucified Christ hangs in stark relief.
