Cap Crown 2b (sdn)
sketchfab
From the Old Kingdom onwards, the Cap Crown is consistently attested, yet it's not until the 25th Dynasty that the term sdn emerges to describe the so-called Kushite cap adorned with two uraei. The crown's earliest known reference comes from the Second Intermediate Period, marked by its association with the symbol of the cap, which suggests a possible etymology. The cap itself appears in various forms - plain, adorned with horizontal lines or circles - often worn alongside an uraeus. Depictions of the cap are predominantly blue or gold in color. A striking exception is the surviving cap discovered on Tutankhamun's mummy, crafted from white linen and embroidered with gold and faience beads. The cap's use within cultic representations has led to its interpretation as a symbol of royal or divine sonship. During the Amarna period, it can also be worn by queens, frequently paired with the Blue Crown. A similarly shaped blue cap is even seen on the god Ptah.
