This relief sculpture is quintessentially Renaissance in style due to several key characteristics. The most striking aspect is its theme: youthful figures draped in flowing garments, eerily reminiscent of putti, embodying the Roman god Cupid. Their unruly locks and rounded features are aesthetics commonly found in ancient Greek and Roman sculpture. A second notable feature is the technique employed by Luca della Robbia: stiacciato, which involves varying degrees of depth in the stone's excavation. This allows the sculptor to imbue his work with perspective, enabling the viewer to discern a foreground featuring the first row of children, and a background comprising a row of children positioned behind them. Developed concurrently with the Renaissance's growing fascination with perspective, this technique greatly enhances the sculpture's visual impact.
