Representation of the Eternal Punishment for Envious Sinners. Described in Canto XIII of the poem "The Inferno", first of the three cantos of Divine Comedy. Canto XIII Poets ascend to the second circle, where they purify the sin of Envy, and hear voices of invisible spirits recommending Charity. They then see the souls of envious people reciting litany prayers for saints; these souls are covered in a hair shirt and have their eyelids sewn shut with wire. Dante Alighieri.
