This modification transforms the soft rubber focus ring on your Canon EF 40mm lens into something a follow focus can grip. It demands some sanding on the inner edge and is an extremely tight fit, so it won't come loose. It will fit the Canon EF-S 18-55mm lens and possibly also other lenses with a 68mm diameter.
