This custom lens housing is specifically designed for the Canon 50mm f1.8 II, taking into account its unique shape and manual focus ring operation. Although it's an inexpensive option, the basic design isn't very stable, making it a challenging target for lens housing modification. We're not convinced that this housing improves the lens's functionality. Nevertheless, I wanted to give my trusty Canon 50mm f1.8 II, which has been by my side for 20 years, a small upgrade, so I decided to take on custom lens rehousing. The Canon EF 50mm F1.8 II was the cheapest lens available for the EOS system, but you can now opt for the successor model, the Canon EF 50mm F1.8 STM. Despite its low price point, this lens produces surprisingly impressive image quality at its smallest aperture setting, offering fast maximum apertures that grant you creative freedom to experiment. Unfortunately, the overall build quality and harsh bokeh make it less desirable, but its excellent price-to-performance ratio makes up for these drawbacks. The manual focus ring control is particularly lacking in terms of build quality, and its appearance doesn't exactly inspire awe. I set out to improve this lens's flaws by challenging custom lens rehousing. Although the result may not be perfect, as it only offers a cosmetic improvement without any significant functional enhancements, I'm proud to share my efforts with you. Please note that if the 3 bolts securing the front of the lens housing are tightened too much, the focus ring won't rotate. To avoid this issue, ensure the balance of these bolts and tighten them only to the correct extent. For this project, I used M5 standard-length 10 or 12mm bolts (x3), M5 insert nuts (x3), and a 52-82mm step-up ring (filter adapter).
