Canon Edward Finch

Canon Finch (1663-1738) was a renowned brother of Daniel Finch, who commissioned some of Rysbrack's earliest work. His bust is proudly displayed in the Museum collection alongside his brother's (Museum no. A.6-1999). Unlike his brother's classical attire, Canon Finch is depicted wearing modern clothing from his time period. This striking bust bears a strong resemblance to another marble likeness of him that adorns the monument of Canon Finch and their third brother, Dean Finch, in York Minster. Born in Antwerp, Rysbrack made London his home base in 1720 and remained there for the remainder of his life. He became one of the most influential sculptors in England during the first half of the 18th century, with a focus on portrait busts like this one and funerary monuments. He also created beautiful garden sculptures, including two Saxon gods that adorn Stowe in Buckinghamshire - Thurner (A.10-1985) and Sunna (A.2-1997), both now part of the V & A's impressive collection.
